On April 7, 2025, at approximately 7:29 p.m., the Austin Police Department responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting in the 300 block of Nueces Street. Officers found an unresponsive Black male with apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:17 p.m. The victim has since been identified as Tavon Brown, born on August 15, 1985.
The suspect, a 16-year-old Hispanic male, fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended by police officers.
According to the investigation conducted by Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists, the victim and an unrelated male were walking towards the Shoal Creek pedestrian bridge when they encountered two males. An exchange took place where the victim commented on the suspect's position on the walkway. The suspect then shot the victim. The motivation behind the shooting remains unclear.
The Austin Police Department is asking for any information related to the case and has encouraged individuals to submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program. The case is classified as Austin's 13th homicide of the year.
"Anyone with information is asked to contact the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS," APD stated. "You may submit your tip anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting austincrimestoppers.org or calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for any information that leads to an arrest."
